Bucerias: A Day in Paradise

Bucerias, which translates to English as “Place of Divers,” has become a popular vacation spot for people who are looking for quieter, more subdued pace of life. The village got its name because the majority of the population were once oyster farmers.

Founded in the 1930 as a fishing village, Bucerias is a 5 mile-long beach located 20 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta near Banderas Bay. Today, Bucerias’ population numbers over 17,000 with plenty of Americans and Canadians calling the place their new home.

Upon setting foot on the village’s road, one cannot help but get a sense of an Old World feel. Walking around the village, you will be virtually transported to an age gone by where people peer out from their colorful houses to greet you. These streets are lined with restaurants, stores, offices and art galleries.

Along the beach, you will see a wide variety of people engaging in water sports or casually lazing by the beach. Many tourists are drawn to Bucerias for whale watching, deep sea fishing and for watching the Blue Footed Booby in its natural habitat.

Although Bucerias has undergone plenty of changes through the years, it still retains the same charm it had when it only had seven palapa huts.

What exactly can you do in Bucerias? If you’re an avid golf player, the village has a few golf courses including the El Tigre, Flamingos Golf Course and Four Seasons Golf Course. If you are the outdoor type, you can opt for the El Eden Canopy Tour, Extreme Adventure Tour, the Wild Vallarta ATV and Canopy tour or the Sierra Madre Expedition.
